Even I was quite suprised to see this... One of my site-readers is so proud of his Dacia Logan MCV that he placed the text 'Romenian Hummer' on the back of his car:

http://www.dacialoganmcv.nl/?p=1384

Who's the first in Romania to do the same..?

Amazing ! You really love your MCVs over there! ohmy.gif

Since all auto makers had to cut costs, quality isn't what it used to be.

Sometimes when people talk about quality many do not even know about a trend in the industry as a whole that is actually not so new. The term is "programmed obsolescence", which in plain language means that products (including cars), or their parts, are intentionally made to last only for X years and to simply break after the programmed period! What makers loose on selling, they make up on maintenance (parts), if we as a customers are too stubborn to buy their new product!!

This fact is (sadly) too often mistaken for poor quality!

Amazingly, I read somewhere these days that a car as a product nowadays is actually highly recyclable, nearly 90%, which combined with a programmed obsolescence makes it even more favorable for the makers...

I agree with g100sic. It's one thing how the car is made in the inside (plastic hard on touch, low quality textiles on seats etc), completely another how it's made overall. My ex girlfriend has a friend in Renault Croatia and by the analysis of three Renault brands (Renault, Nissan, Dacia), Dacia Logan has the lowest percentage (problems/number of cars) of serious problems.

So, are we stupid not to buy pricier brands? If it means more problems with the car, I would rather buy another 'low quality' Dacia smile.gif By that definition, Dacia Logan is a Hummer! smile.gif

In the light of this discussion (how Romanians look at their Dacia vs. the way West-Europeans look at Dacia) I got a question some of you maybe can answer. I found this clip on YouTube:

Of course I can't understand what the song is about. I only see a Suzuki with a Dacia logo attached to it.

I hope someone can explain what this song is about..?

Buf, the explanation is complicated... it's about the romanian culture, and psichology...

Long story short, it's a localized version of the song "Act a fool", performed by Ludacris. It makes fun of some of the Dacia owners, those who put all kind of dumb tuning elements (i.e. the Nike logo on the rear window) on their cars, are racer wannabes but cannot afford to fill the gas tank. Not gezellig at all.

Ah, okay... I can understand that. I've found the original (didn't know it, I'm not that familiar with rapmusic):

The Logan attracks also people that like tuning, just like some other brands. Thanks, now I can put this in perspective. P.S: I was in Romania a few months ago. I won't claim I understand the 'Romanian culture and psychology', but I caught a glimpse of it. Just enough to understand what you mean...

Dacia in Romania has always been a sinonim to kitch tuning. This is the result of bad taste or not enough money. A bit of both I suppose. There are in Romania numerous old Dacias decoraded with kitch tuning elements, many home made.

Now the youngsters bought a Logan by different means (sell the old Dacia, sell the grandma's house, bank credit). They bought the Logan basicly because it's the only car that they can afford.

Unfortunately many think they have bought a BMW and therefore act like they own a BMW, too proud of their new Dacia. Of course the kitch tuning continues.

That completes the picture for me... I fully understand now what the song is about, and what it's trying to say. Unfortunantly, there will always be people who will dress their cars way beyond what the designer or manufacterer was trying to accomplish, regardless the brand of the car. Here, people do the same with their (second hand) Mercedes, BMW, Volkswagen or Audi....

Well, apparently less than here. I've been twice to the Netherlands, lived 3 weeks in Amsterdam and one in Eindhoven, and did not see a single "tuned" car.

I don't agree that dacia was a synonim for bad-taste tunning. The truth is that it was (and still is) one of the most popular brands in Romania (during comunism, very few foreign cars were imported). So most of the kitsch "tunned" cars were dacia cars.
About the romanian psychology... well, there are a lot of things to say. Sometimes we don't know when we do smth right. And I think Logan is one of the things that is done right. The proof is that it is appreciated by western buyers. I myself am a proud owner (I have more than 50 000 km on board, and besides the usual maintenance, I only replaced the wind-screen wipers and a hose for the system that splashes liquid on the wind-screen).
Also, the romanians like to show off (it's strange poor-country-snobbish attitude), that's why some of us despise cheap cars. We wanted to build ferraris or smth.
There is also the problem that during the 80s and even in the 90s, dacia cars had many problems, and were not so reliable. This was mainly due to the communist legacy - the state controlled economy, lack of competition - the dacia factory was not forced by the market to produce good cars - they were sold anyway. So many people still don't trust dacia.
And sometimes we don't understand that we have to promote our products - even if we don't work for Dacia. Or at least have a less destructive attitude. And we have to learn how to give feedback. But this is a forum, and everybody can speak their mind.

Kitch tuning has nothing to do with "romanian psychology". Bad taste is everywhere. How about russian "tunning"? smile.gif Enjoy!

Western people would never understand the Romanian phichology. This is a country where you stay in a 1 bedroom apartment but you buy a 2002 BMW or Audi at around 15000E to show off to you neighbours and make fun of the "full" that has a 2 bedroom apartment but drives a 9000E new Logan. laugh.gif Romania, simply surprizing. biggrin.gif

yes! actually there was a tv report a couple of days ago in which they told that luxury car sells increased. after some digging they found out that luxury cars are bought by people that can't even affort a home(they stay with rent/family) and in some worst cases many people sold their luxury cars on few bucks because the monthly lease was too expensive...
also a lot of people in Romania prefer to buy second-hand cars with over 15o.ooo km just to show off instead of buying a new car(Dacia, Corsa, Fiesta and so on)

Personaly i prefer a logan and money to travel in Europe than a BMW to drive in Bucharest(considering i have enough money for gas)
