It is a normal situation.
DO NOT MAKE HOLES IN YOUR REAR EXHAUST. This operation will end in a damaged rear exhaust. P.S. It's not a Logan related problem. It's a gasoline related problem. |

Do not make any hole in the rear muffler!
It is very normal a small quantity of water in the exhaust system of the cars with catalytic converter (water is a result of: 1. catalytic reaction; 2. increasing temperature in the exhaust when you start the engine). Forget about damages: materials used for Logan’s exhaust are from stainless steel ferrous (not the best quality but I assure you that exhaust will not be damaged because of condense). Conclusion: let the exhaust as it is now and consider normal this condense. |

I know that it is normal to have a small quantity of water, also in cars without of catalytic converter, especially when you drive very often short destinations. Unfortunaletly in my case, I drive 90% very short destination. And rear exhaust in my previus car I changed every 2 years. But it was not made from stainless steel... Exhaust on Logan is made from stainless steel, but I'm afraid that it will be damaged soon...Maybe I'm wrong but my previus experience is telling me to think about this problem..."on time" This post has been edited by DenNy: 21 Sep 2005, 09:39 |

Forget about your previous car. It is a big difference between a mild steel exhaust and a stainless steel one. Even if you drive on short distances your exhaust will not be damaged very soon. You will see in a few years that I have right. Until than do not make holes in your rear muffler!
For GeorgeB - the exhaust system for Dacia Logan is manufactured from stainless steel (except cover for front muffler that is manufactured from aluminized steel). Like I said in my previous post it is a stainless steel ferrous used by the most important producers for exhaust systems in serial production. Renault can't afford to use regular mild steel on exhaust for a car that will be on EU market! |

I belive you. But it is normal for this kind of stainless steel. It is only a superficial corosion (for a few microns) because proportion of iron is bigger than in a high quality stainless steel. Corosion will not penetrate deep in material very soon.

QUOTE(Boris @ 21 Sep 2005, 10:42) It's more of stains than deep rust. The weld looses the sainless property after welding. I'll take a look again. Yes, you are right! more stains than deep rust, any rust. Take a picture maybee... Borla @ Is there offical informations about material used for exhaust?About this what you are saying This post has been edited by DenNy: 21 Sep 2005, 11:48 |

So here's the picture, and that is corrosion. The picture is taken by a mobile phone and it's a bad quality one but the weld seam is shown.

It doesn't look that bad and I don't think that it's penetrated very deep.

QUOTE(My Berlina @ 24 Sep 2005, 16:54) It will never penetrate very deep if it'e stainless steel. When stainless steel is welded there is a change in composition in the area that is affected by heat. The chrom (Cr) and nickel (Ni) migrate from their usual position. If you whant to maintain the stainless property the seam should be heat treated after the welding, and that has not been done. It will never rust like ordinary construcion steel, but that on the picture is corrosiion. Boria, am I right? |

Are you 100% that Logan's exhaust system is made out of stainless steel? Not even more expensive cars don't have it from stainless steel. Could it be that is made out of steel and just coated with thin layer of aluminum? This is more common nowdays... |

Well stainless steel is not that expensive any more, i.e. stainless steel bolts have become quite common for some applications.
If it's made of an austenitic stainless steel it's not magnetic, so you can make a test with a magnet ![]() |

The stuff that gathers in the exhaust isn't water, but a sulphuric acid solution, and this will corode stainless steel in time.
