The UK-based Nevis Engine Company is close to completing work on the second phase of testing of its functioning prototype of a new exhaust valve and intake system that’s claimed to be able to nearly double the fuel efficiency attained by conventional internal combustion engines.

At the heart of the design is both a new combustion cycle, labeled the ‘Bortone Cycle’ after the engine’s inventor, Cesare Bortone, as well as the actual engine itself, which will be available in engine configurations ranging from single to eight cylinder formats. The design is said to achieve near-perfect combustion at all levels of power demands, such as city or highway driving, and it can be configured to run on petrol, diesel, bio-fuels or even hydrogen.

Some of the key aspects of the new design include the doughnut-shaped pistons, low engine weight and size, and the unique Bortone Cycle, which has six times the number of power strokes per revolution of a traditional four-stroke engine. To put its performance into perspective, a two cylinder version displacing 1.0L is estimated to develop peak output of 250hp. Let’s hope it’s not all pie in the sky.

Ăsta e genul de motor minune care nu va echipa nici o mașină de serie, nici nu contează din ce motive, economice, politice, etc.

Asa si dintr-un motor Wankel se pot scoate puteri mari din cilindree mici dar uzura este mai pronuntata iar cuplul este mai mic.

N-are nici o legatura NEVIS-ul cu Wankel-ul.
Wankel a incercat sa minimizeze numarul de piese folosite in motor si atat. In rest e motor in 4 timpi clasic.
NEVIS e pur si simplu alta mancare de peste din ce am citit. Totul e variabil in motorul asta si cateva neajunsuri din motoarele tipice au fost inlocuite prin design.
Face scavenging dar o face cu succes (curat) nu ca motoarele in 2 timpi, are valve de intrare si iesire supra dimensionate, racire uniforma si deci mai eficienta, inertie mai mica la componente critice, etc. E superior din design efectiv. Abia astept sa vad tehnologia asta pe piata.

Atunci roaga-te sa salte arabii pretul petrolului...

Ideea e ca un concept complet nou e f. costisitor de introdus in productia de serie. De la prototip la un produs serie fiabil, ieftin si idiot-proof e cale foarte lunga. Gandeste-te la cati mecanici auto trebuie scoliti la nivelul Europei ininte de a putea vinde asta.
Iar de meritat merita doar daca beneficiul e pe masura. Adica, sa economiseasca combustibil f. mult sau f. scump.

Nu cred c-o sa aiba o viata prea lunga pentru ca deja e tarziu pentru inovatii in domeniul asta. Atatia ani am stat pe Otto si Diesel cand puteau eventual sa faca ceva. Acum nebunia e cu motoare electrice si combustibili alternativi si astea vor domina in aniii ce urmeaza.

Combustibilii alternativi nu mi se par, in opinia mea personala, ca sunt o mare scofala, ceva de viitor. Daca s-ar cultiva pe terenuri care acum sunt in parasire si pe care creste acum iarba si balarii, as mai zice. Dar am vazut ca se fac excese care numai sa reduca poluarea nu fac. De exemplu se defriseaza paduri sau, in America de Sud, mafiotii alunga oamenii de pe pamanturile lor ca sa cultive plantele alea pt. biodiesel.

Defrisarile sunt mult mai paguboase dpvd ecologic decat rahatul de biodiesel care iese din locul respectiv. Adica nu este suficient, metoda nu e destul de eficienta.

Insa toata astea sunt valabile in conditiile de consum ale motoarelor actuale.

Dar un motor Nevis merge alimentat si cu altceva, si consuma putin. In cazul asta, biodieselul ar putea fi o chestie relativ ok.

Biodiesel-ul nu va deveni eficient până când nu se va trece la producerea lui din alge acvatice, care au o densitate mult mai pare pe metru pătrat decât rapița, soia sau mai știu eu ce plantă terestră.
