There's a guy on the Croatian renault forum that claims that his 1.4 Logan engine blew up after 40 000 km, and that the mechanics told him that there is no sence in repairing the car because the whole series is bad.

I must say that the whole story sounds to me like he just made it up. But just out of curiosity and for the fun of it, was there any similar expririences?

P.S. He sure drives a lot, 40 000 km in max one year

No, we don't know about any similar experiences.
Isn't he covered by warranty?
I think there are a lot of cars who made 40.000 in one year (taxi, etc) but it is inadmissible to blow up so soon.

Yes, he's covered by a waranty. But he says something like "A, weel. It's not a problem, becuse his brother is going to buy a new car,..."

I'll aks him what he does.

Blew up, huh ? There are several ways to make any engine "blow up", even at less that 40.000 km.
Although the car is sometimes getting on my nerves, there's sure one thing I must say: the engine has never gave me any troubles. I've had the door handles replaced (they've cracked), a shock absorber replaced under warranty at around 6.400 km (it failed, thus producing some noise when driving) and an annoying noise in the back at road bumps.

Unless that guy can provide some serious evidences, I really doubt that the engine died so fast. 40.000 km per year means around 112 km per day, every day! Hm! I REALLY doubt someone alone can drive a car that much!

Well the guy says that he's been doing delivery for his own private company, and that he has the car for 1,5 years. I can't now remember when did the sale in in Croatia start but i don't think it's that long. I got the car in February.

I know few taxi drivers in my town wich drives Logan 1.4mpi and two of them have Logan from begining of sale in Serbia. Thay drove more then 60.000 km with no problem with engine. Only problem for them is that the big service on 60.000 km is expensive, and some minor things, like door hendles, glowe compartment light... Nothing else. So, the guy is probably part of German Marketing mashinery smile.gif

I'd like to see that web adress too. Are there any pictures with that blown engine too? I'd really like to know what happened there, even if it is in croatian written there's no problem.

The web adress is http://www.renault-club.net/. YOu will have to get registered, and the administrators will have to let yoou in for you to see the forum. They are a bit complicated for my taste, but it can be done.

You CAN blow an engine anytime if you want to.
It is not so difficult to do it.
If Dacia says it is a warranty problem and they will replace it what is the issue?
Okay, you loose time and time is money, but what would you expect?
I think the mechanics are trying to bullshit him in order to buy the car at a small price. Renault gasoline engines are one of the best in the world, I personally know a guy who has an old Renault 12 with 480 000 km with the original engine.

They are not so user frendly on the forum. In registration they ask for ID number. In internet communty no body ask that question, or I wasn't that lucky to see. Maybe they are best in the world but, without me. Sorry for this off topic.

I think that the croatian guy is a big mouth and a liar. I visited the croatian Renault forum, and I found his message. However, I saw that his nickname is very representative: acrobat. Maybe he has a job in a circus and his message is a silly/ stupid clown joke.

Because there are a lot of diffrent factors that might cause an engine to "blow up"

Maybe a fuse blew, and maybe it was the fuse which supplies current to the engine control unit.

Altough it is possible, the chance to just "blow up" the engine is remote especialy considering we are talking about a Renault engine. Maybe a bad maintainance combined with a very intensive and unapropriate use of the car could end up in a defective engine.

The only thing that could have happened is to blow up the air filter with the plastic mask that's over the engine.

When I've got my Logan Ambition the guy that handed the car to me told me not to press the gas pedal before starting the engine because there's a slight posibility the gas might reach into the admision galery and blow up with the air filter plastic mask when starting the engine.

Actualy this happened on the first lot of Logans with few of them and the problems were corrected as Dacia called every sold car with problems in service and solved that problem by rewriting the firmware. My car was produced in September 2005 so there's almost one year since that problem. Anyway, perhaps the guy wanted to be 200% sure nothing wrong happens. So there was a small problem but Dacia corrected it immediately. The problem was present only on 1.6 MPI engines and on the top of the line variant (Ambition that is). And since the problem was on 1.4 MPI... fat chance.

Even if this thing happened nothing's totally wrong with the engine and the car. All it needs is a new filter + filter mask and that's all. The only problem is that it takes some time until the car is fixed in the service and in that time you're not driving.

Only thing is Dacia might give you a rental car. I would definetly ask them. But I'm not very positive they would, I know that when my Passat was being serviced here (America) they gave me a rental car to drive because they told me it would be in service more then 3 days.

DigitalScribe, you realize of course that Ambition has the same engine as a Preference 1.6, so it couldn't be only on the top-line versions... anyway, Dacia fixed this issue long ago.
