Megane GT: performance and pleasure from a car designed for daily use

The Mégane range sees the introduction of Mégane GT, a new dynamic derivative that can be ordered with either the 165hp 2.0 T engine or the diesel 2.0 dCi 150hp powerplant. Mégane GT is aimed at customers looking for driving pleasure from a car they can use on a daily basis. Its sports chassis ensures outstanding handling performance without compromizing the balance between comfort and handling. Mégane GT's distinctive exterior looks and interior design emphasize its sporty calling. The car is available in three- and five-door form and will go on sale at the end of 2006.

Following the success of Mégane Renault Sport, Mégane GT reasserts Renault's interest in the hot hatch segment. The combination of its sports chassis and the choice of two powerplants both acclaimed for their punchy performance ensures that Mégane GT meets the demands of customers looking for pleasure when
they get behind the wheel.

Petrol or diesel power

The market for diesel saloons with a power output of between 140 and 160hp has seen a marked upward turn in western Europe. In 2002, their share of around 2 per cent was little more than marginal, yet today they account for almost 20 per cent of total sales. Mégane GT arrives on the marketplace powered by the high
performance yet inexpensive to run 2.0 dCi engine which boasts the very latest diesel technologies, including piezo-electric injectors, 1,600 bar common rail injection and a variable geometry turbo. With a power output of 150hp (110kW) at 4,000rpm and peak torque of 340Nm at 2,000rpm, it stands out as one of the most
efficient powerplants of its class. Coupled with a manual six-speed gearbox, the 2.0 dCi 150hp engine – like its petrol alternative – ensures a particularly broad useful rev-band. Meanwhile, Mégane GT 2.0 dCi's fuel consumption (5.4 litres / 100km) and C02 emissions (144g/km) are amongst the lowest of its class.
For fans of petrol power, Mégane GT can also be ordered with the 2.0 T engine which delivers maximum power of 165hp (120kW) at 5,000rpm and torque of 270Nm at 3,250rpm. Again mated with a manual sixspeed gearbox, this powerplant takes Mégane GT from standstill to 100kph in just 8.3 seconds. Both of the engines available for Mégane GT combine excellent driving pleasure, performance and flexibility.

A sports chassis for dynamic handling

While some sports saloons tend to place the accent on performance to the detriment of comfort, Mégane GT combines the two. When developing this chassis, Renault's engineers opted for technical solutions that ensured outstanding handling and a particularly effective front suspension layout without detracting from the
car's vertical suspension performance.
To this end, Mégane GT features specifically tuned dampers for optimized control of body roll whatever the driving style. Compared with the previous versions of this chassis used for Mégane 2.0 T and 2.0 dCi Dynamique, Mégane GT's chassis comes with stiffer front and rear anti-roll characteristics aimed at combating body roll under cornering. The ride height has also been reduced by 10mm in order to lower the centre of gravity, while the stiffness of the front and rear springs has been increased by 24 per cent. For optimal steering precision and response, the electric power steering is controlled by specific parameters and the front suspension bushes are stiffer. The ESP has been especially calibrated as a function of the characteristics of Mégane GT's sports chassis to ensure a comfortable ride whether driving around town or on motorways, while at the same time guaranteeing perfectly rigorous handling along twisty roads.
Available in three- and five-door form, Mégane GT is a new model in its own right and takes over from the Mégane range's former Dynamique versions as far as these two powertrains are concerned. Its looks mirror its assertive personality. Outside, Mégane GT comes with a spoiler and chrome grille surround on the front
bumper, as well as side sills, a rear hatch-mounted lip spoiler, specific "dark metallic" 17-inch alloy wheels and twin centrally-positioned chrome exhaust tailpipes with a "dark metallic" GT-badged tailpipe trim. Mégane GT is available in a choice of eight body colours, including Metal Blue which is specific to the model.
The inside of the car reveals an unmistakably sporty ambience including enveloping seats and a leather sports steering wheel complete with GT badging, plus an aluminium pedal assembly and footrest. Leather upholstery is also available as an option. The modern, dynamic interior trim features a stainless steel flake finish for the centre console, glove compartment trim and door handles. The background of the instruments is blue-grey, while the upholstery sports run-and-fell stitching and silver-grey seatbelt straps.

After its unveiling at the Paris Motor Show, Mégane GT will go on sale at the end of 2006 and will be produced at Renault's Palencia factory in Spain.

Mégane GT: high performance day-in day-out

With Mégane GT, Renault covers the high-performance compact car segment, which is booming across Western Europe. Mégane GT is available in coupé and hatchback versions boasting a smart, sports-inspired interior in keeping with the assertive exterior design.
Mégane GT meets the demanding expectations of customers seeking driving pleasure first and foremost. An advanced-technology chassis affords sprightly performance with no compromise on comfort. With a choice of two outstanding engines (165 hp 2.0 T petrol, or 150 hp 2.0 dCi diesel), Mégane GT captures the very essence of sensational driving experience, day-in day-out. Mégane GT is made at the Renault plant in Palencia, Spain, and will be released toward the end of 2006.
The Western European market for high-performance compact cars (140 to 160 hp) is rocketing. From a marginal 2% in 2002, it has grown to account for around 20% of C-segment diesel cars today. To address this demand, Renault is releasing the new Mégane GT.

Distinctive design

Mégane GT, available in coupé and hatchback formats, is a full-fledged member of the Mégane range, and takes the place of the Dynamique trim version with 165 hp 2.0 T petrol or 150 hp 2.0 dCi diesel engine. The car’s strong personality shows through in a highly assertive exterior design, complete with spoiler and chrome-finished radiator grill surrounds on the front bumper, side skirts, hatch airfoil, special 17’’ aluminium wheels in dark metallic finish, and a dual chrome-finish central exhaust outlet with tailpipe trim in dark metallic finish and “GT” badge.
Mégane GT comes in a choice of eight body colours, including the exclusive “metal blue”.
The interior styling abounds with sports features such as bucket seats, leather-covered steering wheel with “GT” badge, and aluminium pedals and footrest. Leather upholstery is available on option. The tone is modern and vibrant, with stippled stainless steel paint finish on the central dashboard panel, glove compartment trim and inside door handles, and a blue-grey background for the instrument dials. The upholstery features beaded stitching, and the seatbelt
straps are in silver-grey.

Choice of diesel or petrol engine

Mégane GT is available with the 2.0 dCi diesel engine, a powerful yet economical unit that implements up-to-the-minute technologies including piezo-electric injectors, 1600-bar common rail and variable-nozzle turbocharger. With power output reaching 150 hp (110 kW) at 4000 rpm and torque 340 Nm at 2000 rpm, this engine is among the most efficient in its category. With drive coupled through a six-speed manual gearbox, the diesel-powered Mégane GT gets snappy response across an extended range, comparable to that of a petrol version. Mégane GT 2.0 dCi also boasts best-in-class fuel economy and pollution control, consuming just 5.4 l per 100 km, and emitting just 144 g of CO2 per km.
To address motorists who prefer a petrol power pack, Mégane GT is also available with the 2.0 T engine, which develops maximum power of 165 hp (120 kW) at 5000 rpm and maximum torque of 270 Nm at 3250 rpm. Coupled with a six-speed manual gearbox, this engine propels Mégane GT from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.3 s.
With either engine, Mégane GT offers discerning motorists a distinctive blend of driving pleasure, pure performance and versatility.

High-performance chassis

Whereas some sports-oriented cars achieve high performance at the expense of driving comfort, Mégane GT manages to combine both virtues. This achievement owes much to the car’s specially developed chassis: the technical solutions adopted by Renault engineers would emphasize body support and front axle efficacy without jeopardizing vertical damping.
Specifically, Mégane GT features specially calibrated shock absorbers affording full control over body motion regardless of driving style. And for improved rear axle tracking, the substructure linkage uses specially hardened parts.
The Mégane GT chassis differs from the previous chassis used on Mégane 2.0 T and 2.0 dCi Dynamique on several points. Front and rear anti-sway subsystems are stiffer to reduce the roll angle when cornering. The body is 10 mm lower, to bring down the centre of gravity. Front and rear springs are 24% stiffer. Front axle precision and response are optimized by special settings for the electric power steering system, and stiffer front suspension damping units.
The electronic stability programme (ESP) is specially calibrated for the high-performance features of the Mégane GT chassis. With this chassis, Mégane GT is capable of slick response along winding roads while losing none of its comfort under urban or motorway conditions.

Proven industrial process

Hatchback and coupé versions of Mégane GT are made at the Renault Palencia plant in Spain, one of the three major sites making Mégane Hatch, Sport Hatch and Sport Tourer. The 165 hp 2.0 T and 150 hp 2.0 dCi engines that power Mégane GT are made at the Renault Cléon plant in France.
Renault has invested €5 million in developing Mégane GT.

Mégane in Europe

Mégane II ranks number-two in the European sales charts, and is the top-selling car (across all segments) in France, Belgium, Spain, Holland and Portugal for 2006 so far.
Since Mégane II first appeared on the market in 2002 it has sold a total of 2,358,648 units in Europe (by end of September 2006). With its seven different body variants, Mégane offers a very close match to differing customer expectations across the whole breadth of its market segment. Top five-star EuroNCAP rating attests to superlative safety levels. Performance and
equipment reap full benefit from up-to-the-minute technologies developed by Renault and the Renault-Nissan Alliance. This goes a long way to explaining Mégane’s benchmark status in the C segment.

Sales growth outside Europe

Mégane II was pitched as a worldwide programme from the outset, with a view to achieving broad international outreach for Renault outside Europe.
From initial release in late 2002 through to the end of September 2006, Mégane II sales outside Europe stood at nearly 700,000 units. And sustained growth continues (up by 12.47% for 2006 so far, with respect to the same period in 2005).
Mégane II is sold in 73 countries outside Europe. Successful performance on these international markets is driven primarily by the Mégane Sedan version made at the Bursa plant in Turkey and the Curitiba plant in Brazil.
Mégane GT was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show and will be released toward the end of 2006.

Mégane Renault Sport dCi: high on performance, low on running costs

The launch of Mégane Renault Sport dCi sees Renault complete its range of sporting cars with the addition of a high-performance diesel. Aimed at drivers who relish everyday driving, the Renault Sport Technologies-developed Mégane Renault Sport dCi will also appeal to those who appreciate reasonable running costs. Its 2.0-litre common rail 127kW (175hp) diesel powerplant boasts generous maximum torque of 360Nm available from 2,000rpm and across an operational power band similar to that of a petrol engine.
Meanwhile, its exceptional combined cycle fuel consumption of just 6.5 litres/100km makes it an ideal choice for fans of sporting cars who wish to drive their car on a regular basis.
In keeping with other Renault Sport Technologies-engineered models, Mégane Renault Sport dCi's standard chassis delivers sports performance, while those who prefer a more focused drive will appreciate the optional Cup chassis.Available with three or five doors, Mégane Renault Sport dCi is built in Renault’s Dieppe factory.

Last December’s launch of the 150hp Mégane GT 2.0 dCi paved the way for the arrival of other dynamic, compact Renault diesel saloons, including Mégane Renault Sport dCi which will appeal to customers who savour the opportunity to drive a high-performance car… but would appreciate it all the more if they could use it every day without paying too much for the privilege.
Drivers of high-performance diesels tend to cover a much higher annual mileage than those in petrol-powered equivalents. For them, therefore, it is vital to strike a balance between running costs and performance when it comes to choosing a new car. The compact diesel saloon segment is expanding significantly in western Europe.

Sensational diesel engine

To meet both needs, Renault has fitted its existing top-end 2.0 dCi diesel to the chassis originally developed for Mégane Renault Sport 2.0 T. This powerplant develops 175hp at 3,750rpm plus a generous 360Nm of torque at 2,000rpm and, in terms of breadth, its operational power band is comparable with that of a turbocharged petrol engine. The throttle mapping has been modified with a view to optimizing response time.
This engine is packed with advanced technology, including a variable geometry turbocharger which provides a wide spread of torque throughout the rev range. Piezoelectric injectors are capable of operating up to five times per cycle, which helps reduce engine noise, fuel consumption and particulate emissions. Injection pressure has been set at 1,600 bar to optimise combustion and improve the fuel/air mixture. The engine is also equipped with an additive-free periodic regeneration filter, as well as two balancer shafts to keep noise and vibration levels down to a minimum.

20dci175cpgt5.jpg

Coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox, this engine sets new standards in the highperformance diesel sector, with combined cycle fuel economy of 6.5 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of just 172g/km. Thanks to its 60-litre fuel tank, Mégane Renault Sport dCi also boasts an unmatched range in the compact diesel saloon segment.
Meanwhile, its performance statistics speak for themselves: 0-100kph in just 8.3 seconds and the 1,000m standing start in 29.4s.

Two proven chassis

Beneath the skin you’ll find the underpinnings of the petrol-powered Mégane Renault Sport 2.0 T and the standard Renault Sport chassis blends dynamic handling with the kind of comfort everyday driving demands.
Independent steering-axis front suspension guarantees precise and efficient handling in all circumstances, while body movement is minimized by a 20mm-diameter anti-roll bar. The front suspension has also been tuned to suit Mégane Renault Sport dCi’s characteristics and weight distribution. Spring stiffness and damper settings are consequently specific to this diesel version.
The rear suspension is based around a programmed-deflection flexible beam, the torsional stiffness of which is equivalent to that of the Cup chassis version of Mégane Renault Sport 2.0 T (80Nm/°). The suspension components themselves are identical to those employed on the Sport chassis Mégane Renault Sport 2.0 T.
A Cup chassis is optionally available. This features an ESP system than can be switched off, as well as specially tuned front and rear dampers and 37% stiffer springs compared with the Sport chassis version. Readily recognisable thanks to its aluminium alloy wheels and anthracite exterior mirrors, this chassis enables committed driving enthusiasts to explore the full potential of this potent Mégane diesel.
Powerful and fade-free, the Brembo braking system features four discs that are impressive in terms of both diameter (312mm and ventilated at the front, 300mm at the rear) and thickness (28mm at the front, 11mm at the rear). The front discs are also equipped with four-piston calipers. The alloy wheels run on Continental Sport Contact 2 tyres, either 225/45R17 (for the Confort trim level) or 225/40R18 (Luxe). These were chosen for their renowned qualities of traction and grip.

The electronically variable power steering has been set up specifically to suit the car’s weight distribution.
In terms of active safety, Mégane Renault Sport dCi is fitted as standard with a dynamic electronic stability programme (ESP) which has also been set up to suit the car’s particular characteristics. Passive safety features are the same as those on any other Mégane – a five star performer in EuroNCAP crash tests.
Externally, Mégane Renault Sport dCi is identical to the petrol version (without the rear spoiler) and is available in both three- and five-door form. Inside, the mood is distinctly sporting thanks to the aluminium pedals, leather steering wheel and seats with increased lateral support. A range of accessories will also shortly be available to enable Mégane Renault Sport dCi owners to customize their vehicle as a function of their individual tastes.

Dieppe’s sporting know-how

Mégane Renault Sport dCi is built on Renault’s Dieppe assembly line, using shells delivered from the company’s Palencia plant, in Spain. The production system has been modified to the particular requirements of this high-performance diesel and quality control standards are a match for the very best. The Dieppe factory oversees production of all sporting models developed by Renault Sport Technologies.
