Care-i "majoritatea" aia? Pe calculatoarele personale avem Windows, Mac OS şi Linux, iar înainte de Windows au mai fost OS/2 şi MS-DOS. Iar în lumea calculatoarelor adevărate avem o multitudine de UNIX-uri, care sînt scumpe rău de tot. Dintre toate astea, eu numai de Linux ştiu să fie gratuit (şi după părerea mea cam atîta şi face, dar asta e altă discuţie). Mă refer la sisteme complete, utilizabile, răspîndite, nu la jucării dezvoltate de amatori şi pe care nu le folosesc decît zece oameni în toată lumea. De asemenea, mă refer la sisteme de operare de uz general, nu la sisteme specializate pe un anumit proces. RedHat, Canonical, Novell, Mandriva sunt amatori? Depinde cum privesti lucrurile - daca iei fiecare distributie de Linux ca un SO, atunci chiar ajungem la sute. Si nu toate sunt facute pe genunchi. Dar ma indepartez de ceea ca am vrut sa subliniez initial si anume faptul ca nu trebuie sa ne mire un SO gratuit. Ar trebui sa ni se para ceva normal. Anormalitatea sa fie la aia care cer bani.

As an employee of a parts supplier for Acer, one of Google partners for Chrome OS (true!), he was privy to a brief demonstration of a Private Developer Beta. They showed a full installation, which took about 10 minutes. After installation was done, desktop to desktop reboot took about 25 seconds.

As for the desktop, it is minimalist: at the bottom of the screen is the Chrome Bar, which is the system's dock, start menu, or whatever you'd like to call it. The glowing blue icon, which looks like the center of the Chrome logo (also true!), opens the main menu, and hides when not in use. It can be activated with the Windows key, a la the Start Menu, though Chrome-loaded netbooks could well have a dedicated Google key, or Chrome key.
Now, some reasons to be suspicious: these shots come a little soon for my comfort, just one day after the announcement; the shots could easily be mocked up in an existing Linux desktop environment (this one looks a bit like XFCE, actually); the shots don't necessarily look like they were taken in an Acer conference room (floral table tiles? really?); and, most damningly, the colors in the word "Google" are ordered incorrectly. Lastly, the demo was carried out on a Acer Extensa 4620Z—not a netbook, which would accord with Google's stated first target for the OS. So...

But you can see the same pictures I can, and description in the leak is quite long, so just have a look for yourself—I'm just not overly hopeful. And anyway, even if this is real, we're just getting a tiny aesthetic preview of an early build of Google's Linux desktop environment, not any meaningful insight into how the OS works, performs or is in any way distinguishable from other existing products.

mda... un sistem de operare cu toate prostiile pe care le are google integrate... poate or fi multi care folosesc google toolbar, google home, android, page rank, google talk si alte prostioare... Astea vor fi adunate gramada intr-un sistem de operare... Big deal. Daca stia sa faca si de mancare atunci puteam spune ca e ceva nou si nemaivazut. Nu vorbim de stabilitate pentru ca momentan nu exista softuri compatibile.. Stim foarte bine ca orice Windows/OSX este foarte bun daca e curat si chel.

@VladSoare: sistemele alea UNIX sunt raspandite in intreaga lume... RedHat/ Fedora, slak, mandriva, suse - moka bun, practic, open source, super stabil, virusi extem de putini etc.

Android, Chrome OS Relationship Confusing Everyone, Including Google

Just as companies were starting to get serious about installing Android, a mobile Linux OS, on netbooks, Google announces Chrome, a netbook Linux OS. The relationship between the two OSes is already getting tense, or at the very least, awkward.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt is now admitting that it took him quite a while to warm to the idea of Chrome the browser, even longer to come to terms with the possibility of Chrome the OS, and in both cases only after Larry Page Sergey Brin literally nerded him into submission:

I just gave up, but there is no question I am hugely supportive of Chrome and Chrome OS. They are game-changers. They change the way you think about your computer.
Meanwhile, Android's perceived role in the world was expanding. After all this soul-searching, though, Schmidt must have a clear vision of parallel, non-conflicting roles for Android and Chrome OS, right?:

Although it appears they are two separate projects, there's a great deal of commonality. Eventually they may merge even closer."
This is somewhere between "oops!" and "I have no idea."

But hold on! There could be a third way! Digitimes is reporting that Intel is in talks with Google to help adapt Android for use in MIDs, the so-far ill-fated bridge devices between netbooks and smartphones. Technologically, this seems like a reasonable secondary use for Android. Commercially, though, MIDs are something of a ghetto; a category broached by few manufacturers, and unfamiliar (or unattractive) to most customers.

The most obvious conclusion to all this is for Android (and Android enthusiasts) to narrow ambitions and focus on what we know it's good at: cellphones, and possibly portable media players. This is something that will probably happen organically, but only after a few more news cycles worth of bewildering quotes and announcements from Google, which we will gleefully document.

ma manca curiozitatea si am bagat si eu gugle crome....e intr-adevar ceva mai rapid, DAR...l-am instalat si i-am dat sa-mi importe setarile din firefox, totul ok.
am inceput sa navighez, etc...ok...din curiozitate am incercat ma loghez pe router si hopa' kaspersky nu ma lasa...cica un trojan....efectiv m-am blocat, nu ma asteptam la asa ceva!
am incercat sa intru cu firefox si ie, nimic! (mi-a blocat accesul la logarea pe router, si nici eu nu am insistat, l-am lasat in damblaua lui)
ok. dau reset fizic la router, si incerc cu firefox: ok!....bag cromu': oha!, din nou firefox: nu vrea!, ie nici el...
am repetat treaba si cu ie....merge si cu ala....dupa 3 reset la router, am subscris la kasperkologi, am dat jos cromu'....incercat cu firefox si ie merge perfect....sugestii despre o cauza posibila, ceva?! nu de alta dar nu e placut sa-ti pui un browser si sa vezi ca ti se taie logarea pe router din firewall (repet: nu am vrut sa umblu la setari pt kaspersky, din simplul motiv ca de 2 ani de cand l-am setat ultima oara nu am avut prbl cu calculatorul)
