At the average local garage, Shell Optimax costs 6p a litre more than regular unleaded. And it's a similar story down the road at the BP station. Their supposedly superior Ultimate petrol costs another 7p a litre compared to the standard stuff.

So why are they more expensive?

Shell's website just makes rather modest and general claims about Optimax giving you a cleaner engine and more responsive performance. They also tell us it was developed in conjunction with the Ferrari Formula One team.

BP say Ultimate is the obvious choice for the better driver, giving you a power boost - it's rather like driving with a bigger engine. It also goes into considerable detail about gains in fuel economy and shows photos of bits of engines with and without grime attached.

So far, so good - but to find out whether the fancy fuels were worth the extra, we decided to get scientific. We took three cars, with three very different levels of performance, and measured the power produced by each car while running on each fuel. Would we find a significant difference?

After six runs on supermarket unleaded we drained the tank. And because modern cars adjust their timing according to the fuel they're using, we reset the ECU, to make sure the next fuel would start from a level playing field.

We then refilled with Optimax and did a series of runs on that, and finally emptied, refilled, reset and repeated the exercise with Ultimate. These are the results...

Renault Clio

First up was the new Renault Clio, an ordinary family runaround.

On ordinary unleaded the Clio produced 81 bhp.
On BP Ultimate, it produced 81 bhp.
And on Shell Optimax, it was, you guessed it, 81 bhp.

So it seems an engine geared towards economy simply can't take advantage of the extra performance fancy fuel can offer.

VW Golf GTI

Next, the VW Golf GTI. A modern turbocharged petrol car that uses direct injection to combine responsive manners with decent economy.

On ordinary unleaded the Golf produced 172 bhp.
On BP Ultimate, it produced just a little more - 174 bhp.
But on Shell Optimax, the Golf GTI put out 177 bhp.

Certainly an improvement, although whether you'd be able to feel that extra five bhp around town is a different matter.

Subaru Impreza WRX STI

And finally, the Subaru Impreza WRX STI, a highly tuned performance car that should relish the stability of higher octane fuel.

On ordinary unleaded the Impreza put out 235 bhp.
On BP Ultimate, it managed 248 bhp.
And on Shell Optimax, it produced 249 bhp.

So clearly, the fancy fuels here are well worth the extra money, giving you almost another 15 bhp over ordinary unleaded.

So how do you choose between Optimax and Ultimate? We broadened the test a bit further to examine the Impreza's torque output while running under the three different fuels to see if that would help us to produce a clear winner:

Ordinary unleaded gave the lowest torque with 232 ft lbs.
BP Ultimate produced a much healthier 248 ft lbs, and
Shell Optimax was even better, producing 258 ft lbs.

That would result in a more willing engine, happier to accelerate hard from low down in the rev range.

So premium fuels can make your car go faster and, on the basis of our tests, Shell's Optimax is a more performance orientated fueld than BP's Ultimate, but only if your car can appreciate the difference.

Stiam. concluzia e ca pt peste 90% din cazuri e mai eficient sa bagi benzina mai ieftina. Multe chestii sunt numai marketing, de fapt astia cumpara benzina de la unii la altii si cica o "aditiveaza".

Bafta!

hmm cea mai buna aditivare dupa mine, daca vrei cai in plus, este:

benzina+etanol
motorina+kerosen
benzina+naftalina (creste CO, creste si viteza exploziei, totusi e cam daunator pt motor... din ce am auzit)
si ar mai fi...

Nu pricepi că acel kerosen, în cantități mici, se adaugă în motorină, pentru a coborî punctul de îngheț pe timp de iarnă? Și că este exact motorina aceea specială pentru sezonul rece, ce se vinde și la noi...?
