Mounted in the grille aperture ahead of the radiator, the Active Grille Shutter features motorised horizontal vanes which can rotate through 90 degrees to block the air flow. Automatically controlled by the car’s electronic control unit, the vanes can be rotated into
16 different positions – from fully closed to fully open – depending on the amount of cooling air required.

When fully closed, the reduction in drag means that the Active Grille Shutter can reduce CO2 emissions by 2 per cent.

So it is just a matter of time before they become standard equipment on all cars, right?

Automakers continue to search for a wide range of styling tricks to reduce aerodynamic drag in an effort to improve fuel economy.

General Motors global styling boss Ed Welburn, interviewed last week on the sidelines of the Frankfurt auto show, said “anything that helps reduce the interference along the side of a car is a good thing.”

So it looks like removable rear fender skirts are a done deal, right? Not so fast.

It turns out after extensive testing by GM, removable fender skirts flunked. They are more of a problem than a solution.

According to Welburn, there are several drawbacks:

• The fender skirt causes tire pressure to increase. Although he did not say it, neither GM nor any automaker wants to create a design that increases the probability of tire failure.

• Removable skirts are difficult to keep in place properly, plus there’s the added cost of each skirt.

• Pick one: To use a fender skirt, the rear tires need to be narrower to fit inside the wheel well or the vehicle track needs to be narrower or the body needs to be what he called “pulled out” to accommodate the same size tires that are steering the car.

Welburn said pulling the body out, essentially widening the body where the rear tires are located, increases aerodynamic drag.

While Welburn didn’t explain the other two choices described above, a narrower tire would reduce vehicle capacity and a narrower vehicle track could slightly increase the probability of rollover.

Says Welburn: "The short answer is, skirts don’t help on a production car."


Singura problema reala este mizeria. Atat timp cat nu se monteaza pe masini de wrc, nu are nici o problema incalzirea cauciucului.

Innovative Active Grille Shutter fitted as standard

The new Focus is the first car in its class to standardise an Active Grille Shutter – an innovative new system that optimises aerodynamics by using vents to control airflow through the grille to the cooling system and engine compartment.

With careful optimisation of aerodynamic details, it was possible to achieve a significant reduction in drag compared to the previous Focus:
• 4-door – CD = 0.274 (was 0.304), reduced by 10 per cent
• 5-door – CD = 0.295 (was 0.318), reduced by 7 per cent

The Chevy Eco Cruze utilizes an innovative automatic air shutter system that closes the grill vents at higher speeds to reduce drag by .016 – adding .5 mpg and helping push the Cruze to the magic 40 mpg number. The shutter system is fitted to sensors that measure changes in speed or temperature. If the temperature drops or the sensors measure sufficiently high speeds, the vents will be closed by electric motors, cutting down the amount of air that enters the engine bay. Why not simply keep the grill vents closed all the time? Because added airflow is needed to help cool the engine at lower speeds.

Cam complicat sistemul cu grilele adaptive. Senzori, motorase, clapete - o gramada de chestii care se pot strica. E loc de imbunatatiri in alta parte fara a mai fi nevoie de chestia asta.
Nu in ultimul rand mai adauga si un pic de greutate, ceea ce nu e deloc benefic pentru economia generala a eficientei.

Am adaugat o comparatie. Focus sedan cu carenaj si logan cu carenaj. Se vede perfect unde este eficient (bine, la focus mai exista si varianta cu esapament sub portbagaj, nu ca in imaginile de mai sus sub bancheta spate, copiat sau nu dupa vw passat).

"One of the most interesting features of the 2012 Boss 302 is its quad exhaust system, developed to give the car a unique sound. The two primary pipes exiting the rear handle most of the exhaust gases, while two smaller pipes branch off from the exhaust crossover and exit discreetly along the lower body sides, just in front of the rear wheels, sending gases through a set of metal discs that generate unique sounds. Should the owner live somewhere with more lax noise regulations, the plates can easily be removed in favor of aftermarket dump valves."
