Because machining and manufacturing techniques have come a long way since the early 60's and there is no need for that. Oil change intervals have grown from 5000 km to over 20000 km.
It's just that you will spend some money on a new filter and some oil (50-80 euros perhaps) and it will be for nothing. It will not do any harm, but any advantages gained will be minuscule. Cheers, Einstein, Romania |

You should check your manual, because in mine - I have a petrol version- it says that if you use it mainly in the city you should change the oil after 7500 km, not 15000km -which is the normal interval for petrol versions-. Isnt there something similar for diesel versions?

Mine says 15000 and 30000 and that is all it needs !!! Why is town work harder than wizzing down the Autobahn at 150kmh ????
I stick to the new standards and I will not Help the OIL Multis anymore than I need to .In 15000 km my last service needed 0,2 ltr oil StU |

Actually, the explanation is quite simple, the engine is not running by the mileage but by the time, and the car doesn't record the time, only the mileage. Therefore, if most of the time you crawl or stand at the traffic lights instead of "wizzing down the Autobahn", you must take that into account and compensate for the extra time the engine was running in standstill.
Not to mention, as in my case, that distances in the city are often shorter, so the engine is not running at optimum conditions, that is, it hardly ever warms enough. The cold start is especially stressful for the engine because at the moment of the start the oil is not yet distributed to all the places where it is needed. [Why is town work harder than wizzing down the Autobahn at 150kmh ????]
Stu, i couldn't believe my eyes that it is u whose saying these ![]() piston rings r not so tight,if they where, they would score the inside of the cylinder hence u get contaminants gassy mixture of petrol and air would enter the sump and some will mix with oil and dilute it and sometimes give u the impression of not consuming oil (burning oil). This is the usual scenario in the sump ,if u drive mainly in the city (travel short distances and long stops) ur oil wouldn't become hot enough to evaporate these contaminants, but if u wiz down the Autobahn at 150 the oil would be hot enough to evap these contaminants and would degrade slower. As u r 6 years my senior i wouldn't give u any wise cracks.Just to let u know. Aali This post has been edited by Aali: 20 Jul 2008, 16:31 |

I have checked the book and it says that if you have a Diesel:
If you use your car at least 50% idling or going very slowly, you should change the the oil+ oil filter+ air filter every 5 000 km or 6 months, the fuel filter after 10 000 km or 1 year and the distribution belts + accessories belt every 45 000 km or 4 years. If over 50% of the journeys are done with an average speed below 30km/h or when using your car in a dusty environment, you should change the oil+ oil filter+ air filter every 5 000 km or 1 year, distribution belts+ accessories belt every 45 000 km or 4 years. above is correct as written, but we were, as far as i recall, NOT talking about the diesels, but the
normal gasoline version, and NOT about special conditions like extreme dust, or extreme idling/short driving situations, such as for taxis or similar. this then always changes things. whoever post here with real issues, should always indicate in the personal settings what type of car he has. greetings - heinz - |

The same is stated for gasoline versions, only with according intervals, replace 10000 with 15000, 5000 with 7500 and so on.
My own statistics say that my average speed in the city is hardly over 20 km/h and there are times when it drops even under 20 km/h. And I am talking of the average over a longer periods, I reset my OBC only on refueling. So if one doesn't make a lot of open road driving (say, going only to a summer vacation), it is not so uncommon to get into this "special" category. |

eXtenSion, i stand corrected. the very initial post was about a diesel, but there he
was worried '' ... first oil change at 500 or 1000 miles ... and his being then far to late at 10000km ''. later on the discussion changed to the main intervals between changes, and all the people talking were driving gasoline versions. sorry, i should have watched out more carfully, but the basic idea does not change, be it in intervalls of 15 or 10 thousand: the intervalls given by DACIA are safe, and the ones for 'extreme' conditions are really only for those. greetings - heinz - This post has been edited by heinz57g: 27 Jul 2008, 19:47 |

Like Heinz has just said You CAN trust Dacia they will not tell you to wait to long to change your oil if it means damaging the Motor and having to pay for the repair themselfs through the Dacia Garantie and dont forget they could make it earlier and then make more money out of you on the servicing intervalls .Just follow your Handbook instructions and enjoy your modern Vehicle

Thanks you Guys,
You have given this subject a good airing, nobody has said why I shouldn't change the oil, so for my own peace of mind I shall do the job before I go on holiday in a week or two. Now much happier, Barrie. SW France. ![]() |

It's your money man, you can throw it if you want! But...
If you wanted a peace of mind, you could have given it to the charity instead of changing oil when it is not necessary... You could have made more people happy then just yourself! |

very well said, g100sic.
actually (and pls dont debate this), oil, any oil, needs a short run in period before it is at top performance. this is why on ralley and racing cars never fresh oil is filled in, but oil that has been in an engine for some 500-1000 km already. now on a DACIA it surely would not make a difference, but our friend barrie will have those 1000km where he drives a bit under optimum, and not only wastes the new oil, but also those 1000kms. but, each to his own liking. buy a cheap car (and thats what a logan is supposed to be) and throw out the money saved on oil. greetings - heinz - |
